The American Museum of the House Cat is the private, life long collection of Dr. Harold Sims and his wife. Dr. Sims has been an advocate for animals since beginning his career in marine biology more than 60 years ago. He is an educator, historian, humanitarian, cat whisperer and antique lover who has devoted his retirement years in service of sheltering cats. Though both institutions employ a small staff, Harold refuses a salary and considers this his gift to cats and their human caretakers. We appreciate your decision to support the American Museum of the House Cat. With your generosity and support we can ensure both the House Cat Museum and the Catman2 Shelter future are successful.
A Plea From Our Curator To All Cat Lovers
The museum is a non-profit organization but the non-profit status only seeks donations for the operation of the museum. No donations have been or will be used to purchase more items for the museum nor to make major changes to the building. Income for the museum comes from ticket sales, sale of items inside our gift store, and donations. I would like one day to donate the museum to the non-profit but I cannot do that until the museum is operated as a charitable foundation. This way the museum will be owned by the foundation and operated as such. To do this I will need your help to raise the funds to bring this about. We can obtain these donations from; cat lovers like you, grants, bequests, pet industry corporations and/or charitable organizations such as the ones that support public radio stations and other non-profit organizations. With these funds, the museum would be operated as a foundation that could live on after me. This would ensure its future.
The Catman2 Shelter and American Museum of the House Cat are the living legacy of Dr Harold W. Sims, Jr to those who love cats. You may learn more about the philosophy of our cage free, no kill feline sanctuary and mission of the cat museum through their websites: Supporting the museum will help ferment how the history of the house cat will continue to thrive as we seek to entertain, inspire and educate future generations. Museums rely on the generosity of patrons and donors like you, the cat lover. Your donations help us maintain our operational costs; and, support the services & programs our community has come to depend upon, such as, the low-to-no-cost spay and neuter clinic and the TNR feral cat control service our Catman2 Shelter provides.

Once a year we give back your generous gifts and transfer money from the museum profits to the Catman2 Shelter. The Museum also seeks sponsors from the corporations and businesses that profit from the sales of cat related products, such as cat food, litter, and all the other items cat lovers buy for their cats. The American Museum of the House Cat was built out of love for the people that love cats. It is one of only two cat museums in America and one of nine in the whole world.
How you choose to give will benefit both the Museum and, ultimately our Shelter Kitties. We plan to build up a fund that will help make the museum’s future bright. Whether you choose to make a one time contribution, a recurring monthly donation, a bequest, and/or support us in non monetary ways through volunteerism, social shares, smart shopping through places like Amazon Smile Shop & hosting fundraising events our hearts are humbled. I will help support both as long as I live. After that, it’s up to you. I, and all the cats I know, thank you in advance. Dr. Harold W. "Once [a cat] has given its love, what absolute confidence, what fidelity of affection! It will make itself the companion of your hours of work, of loneliness, or of sadness. It will lie the whole evening on your knee, purring and happy in your society, and leaving the company of creatures of its own society to be with you."
~ Théophile Gautier, Ménagerie intime
